The World of CRO — UX and UI

Table of Contents

Any well-designed website or application must include user experience (UX) and user interface (UI). Website visitors may become irritated and leave if the UX is poorly constructed, while inefficiency may result if the UI is poorly constructed.

Before anything else, we need to separate what UX and UI are. Top put simply:

  • UI / User Interface – all about the aesthetics ie. “the look, feel, and design” that the website visitor sees and interacts with
    • Fonts
    • Color scheme
    • Layout of elements
    • Size of elements
    • Placement
  • UX / User Experience – as its name suggests, UX handles how a visitor goes through your website ie. the what they feel, what questions are answered, the flow of their journey, etc.

User Experience

UX is all about meeting your visitors’ needs and creating a positive website experience. If the user closed your site without answers to their questions and needs, that’s a result of poor UX.

You need to remove any stumbling blocks or bewildering choices from the things your customers see and do. Good UX encompasses ensuring that all of your product’s functions work as intended, as well as responding quickly to user feedback. It goes beyond simply creating a pleasant or attractive interface. Good UX is required if you want your users to stay long enough to turn them into conversions—or better, to fans!

Some of the ways UX improves website experience include:

  • Research
  • Surveys
  • Continuous Tests

We’ll talk about this more in the following section.

User Interface

A good user interface helps users accomplish what they desire quicker while avoiding annoying them in the process. In a nutshell, it should be easy for your customers to locate what they’re looking for.

Some of the ways to improve your website’s UI are:

  • Graphics/Visuals: Every page’s graphics must be attractive and appropriate for the age group it’s intended for, according to the design. They must be easy to use as well, with buttons that are large enough and labels that are readable.
  • Navigation: Every page should have clear navigational paths that lead users where they want to go so they won’t have to search through menus or scroll down endless lists.
  • Interactivity: An engaging site will keep the attention of your visitors on you, and is a powerful tool in making them return to the site again and again.

Improving UX and UI

Usability testing and user feedback are two of the most common methods for improving UX and UI design. Running usability tests with potential users before embarking on a new project ensures that the design meets your users’ needs. You can quickly tweak and re-tweak things without angering or alienating your potential customers due to mishaps. Trust us, there will always be mishaps. The key is to prevent it as much as possible.

Researching tried-and-tested designs can also work great for your own site or app. You may also look to online data, such as Google Trends or Dribbble, for ideas. Besides these two, also use readable typefaces at tiny sizes and avoid cluttered layout.

It all boils down to having scientific rigor. You don’t implement elements just for the vibes. It’s not “I think this will work” as has been the strategy of so many marketing professionals in the past (and even in the present age).

CRO takes a look at hard data and derives hypotheses that we test. This way, every effort is not wasted. It can seem like these tiny tweaks will only result in tiny improvements. But when adding details up, the improvement is exponential.
